About Rings together

Making & Giving Rings

The giving of rings is a timeless tradition. Rings are a symbol of commitment - a symbol to treasure.  Which is why the rings you wear are the most personal jewellery you own.  So wouldn't  making a ring yourself  be even more precious? (and fun!)

Rings Together is a bonding experience for friends, couples, parents & children.  You will leave with a ring you made for yourself, or wearing a ring made for you.

Forge It Yourself

Guided throughout the process, you will measure, prepare, solder, clean, shape and polish your ring in Sterling silver - and be finished within a couple of hours.

All the equipment and materials are brought to your home, quickly set up, and then tidied neatly away.

A range of options in gold are also available on request.

Your Ring Guide

Tim Hay-Edie has been making jewellery for friends and commissions for many years.  Largely self-taught, Tim loves the craft and is a natural teacher.  He will give you as much help, time and encouragement as you need.

Rings Together started after Tim made rings for his children. Many enquiries later and an idea was finally born!

FAQs

Q: Is it safe?

It is completely safe. Tim will give a safety briefing at the start, but the butane torch used for soldering is no stronger than what you'd use to make a creme brulee. The "safety pickle" used to clean the metal is no stronger than vinegar.  You will be wearing safety goggles and an apron.

Q: What's involved? What do I get?

Tim will come to your home with all the equipment. You provide a suitable flat surface - like the kitchen table. Tim will take you through what's required to make a ring from scratch. He will explain each step and get you to follow. The idea is that you make the ring yourself but if you get stuck Tim will help out.  At the end you get to keep a ring that you made for yourself, or exchange rings with a loved one.

Q: How long does it take?

It depends on how fast you want to go. Typically allow 60 to 90 minutes.

Q: Will there be a big mess?

No! Tim will bring all the equipment, set up and tidy away carefully when you're finished. The only mess might be (silver) metal filings, or metal polish - but you will be wearing an apron and the table will be covered with a thick canvas cover.

Q: Who is it for?

Making a ring for yourself, for your partner, your best friend or your siblings. I've seen wonderful interactions between a parent and child - where they made rings for each other and then exchanged them.

I think it's best with a group of two, but three or four is fine. More than that and things become complicated without a workbench and more tools.

Q: How much does it cost?

Call for a firm quote. The cost depends on the number of people and rings you want to make - but typically £75 total for two people. This price includes the Sterling silver rings, all materials and travel to your home. Prices for gold rings would be in the range of £150-300 (each) depending on carat and ring size.
